Whether you are walking through your house or in a department store, at some point during your day you will walk by a mirror. What is your reaction to what you see? My Mother Dear would sometimes walk by a mirror and say, "well hello there, beautiful!" She did it confidently while maintaining a little humility...kinda the way an old Hollywood starlet would sound...maybe like a Jayne Mansfield or Lucille Ball. I admired her confidence.
When I walk by a mirror sometimes I think the same thing or at least I try to. Most of the time it is a loud and thunderous sigh and I think...If I could only lose those "pandemic" pounds or I need to do something with this nest I call hair. Either way, it isn't the most positive way of thinking or looking at myself. We have two daughters so, I have to work really hard to not pick apart my outward appearance, so that I do not encourage them to do the same.
I have a friend who refers to themselves as just plain....nothing special...just plain. I am convinced though that they are by far one of the most beautiful people I know. They fully embody the saying that my mama impressed upon me as a little girl..."pretty is as pretty does". So, why are they so beautiful? It's because they have the ability to know just exactly the right moment to write me a letter, send me a card or text me a message that is nothing more than "thinking of you" or "how are you doing".
I believe that when we have a relationship with God that is when He will come out in us at just the right time making us beautiful in appearance. The contemporary gospel duo Mary, Mary preform a song called God in Me. It's what we don't see that makes us truly beautiful. We hear folks talking about how God will show up in hospitals, funerals and on a mission field. What if God showed up in us every single day? Imagine the impact we all could have on this world if other people could see the God in us. Imagine the impact we would have on ourselves if we started working on and looking for the God inside us. After all, that is what counts. As for my friend I was referring to earlier, I was actually referring to a number of my friends as we all have the potential to be just plain.
